The exhibition was composed of two parts: (1) Five artists contributed a »work« that only exists in the imagination. Each idea was enclosed in two envelopes. One of the two envelopes was framed and presented in the exhibition space. The other one was given to a randomly selected person as a present. (2) Five artists contributed an »object« from (almost) unworked material. - Curated under the name of »Jaromir Hladík«, organized by Neue Berliner Räume. (The photographs show works by Geta Bratescu, Nina Canell, Haris Epaminonda, Michael Müller, and Katie Paterson [framed envelopes] as well as Felix Kiessling, Markus Hoffmann, and Vajiko Chachkhiani.)

For the eighth and last iteration of the series »Der Rückzug der Dinge« / »The Retraction of Things«, Ceal Floyer presented »Four Floors«, a site-related intervention. 3½, the tiny room between the third and fourth floor of KW Institute for Contemporary Art, was closed for the exhibition. »Four Floors« was presented in the staircase. - The following letters were added to the numbers on the doors in the staircase: »st« (for the »1«), »nd« (for the »2«), »rd« (for the »3«), and »th« (for the »4«). The doors to the third and fourth floor were closed during the opening hours. The doors to the first and second floor were open during the opening hours.

When the collective »Das Numen« was asked to contribute an exhibition to the series »Der Rückzug der Dinge« / »The Retraction of Things«, it decided not to present a work, but rather to host the series' curator, me. For 12 consecutive days and nights I lived and worked in the small exhibition chamber 3½ (without leaving the institution), trying to calculate the probability of a meteorite impact right where I sit. - »Das Numen« consists of Julian Charrière, Andreas Greiner, Markus Hoffmann, and Felix Kiessling. The exhibition was prepared with the generous support of Dr. Gabriel Bihain (Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam).

»Donald Bernshouse« (Der Rückzug der Dinge 3) at KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin 2014

The exhibition consisted of drawings / concepts that Donald Bernshouse, an early »minimalist«, created from the mid to late 1960s before he left New York to return to Hawaii.

Letter from Philip Leider, editor of Artforum, to Donald Bernshouse, June 23, 1966:

Dear Mr. Bernshouse,

Irving Blum of the Ferus Gallery has shown me some of the drawings which you recently sent to him.

This fall Artforum will be printing an essay by Robert Morris – a second part of the essay which was originally published in our February 1966 issue [Notes on Sculpture] – and I would be very interested in printing one or two of these drawings along with the article.

I am writing to secure your approval for this, and also to request that you permit us to use your name, rather than »Standard Systems«. (I would have no objection to using both, however.)

I should also like to know whether you have any photographs of completed sculptures.

When you have a moment, I would be pleased to hear from you, telling me something about yourself.

On October 17, 2010, Sebastian Leber published the following article in the newspaper »Der Tagesspiegel«:

Als Spätzugezogener bekommt man diese Geschichten ständig aufgetischt: von illegalen Bars und Clubs und Kinos, von Partynächten in leeren Fabrikhallen, beleuchtet nur durch Tausende Teelichter. Damals in den Neunzigern, als Berlin noch wild war! Solche Geschichten nerven, wenn man selbst immer der ist, der nicht dabei war. Und dann das: Ein Anruf von einem Freund, geh Samstagabend in die schick gewordene Auguststraße in Mitte, rein in ein leerstehendes, baufälliges Wohnhaus, das Einzige weit und breit. Die morsche Holztreppe rauf und anschließend: einfach staunen. Über die kreisende Spielzeugeisenbahn, über aufheulende Staubsauger, über den zerfließenden Butterblock auf einem Podest. Es ist eine Ausstellung für bloß eine Nacht. Von 45 Künstlern der Stadt. Erst am Vorabend haben sie sich Zugang verschafft, bis in den späten Vormittag hinein aufgebaut, untereinander besprochen, wer was in welchem Raum zeigt. Skulpturen, Videoinstallationen, Fotografien. Es staubt, es riecht nach Becks und die Besucher drängeln sich im Treppenhaus. »Geist« ist der Name dieser Ausstellung, weil sie kommt und geht wie einer. Wenn Montag die Bauarbeiter zurückkehren, werden sie sich wundern, woher der Butterfleck auf dem Boden stammt. Es wird so viel geschmunzelt über die Kreativen in dieser Stadt, über ihre Projekte und ihre Begeisterungsfähigkeit für abseitige Ideen. Dabei sind es so beseelte Aktionen wie »Geist«, die Berlin lebenswert machen. Ja, man kann das Hausfriedensbruch nennen. Man kann aber auch einfach mal überwältigt sein.
